Why some people develop bunions and others don’t remains a mystery, but there are several factors that put you more at risk.
What are ingrown toenails?
Ingrown toenails are toenails that grows into the surrounding flesh of your toe instead of up and over it. Generally, ingrown toenails occure on the inside or outside corners of your big toe. The condition leads to swelling and inflammation that make even the slightest touch extremely painful.
What causes ingrown toenails?
Poor Nail Trimming
Toenails that are cut too short or at an angle, can direct the edges of your toenail to grow into the sensitive flesh on the sides of your toe.
Poorly Sized Shoes
Crowded toes are unhappy toes! If you spend your days in shoes that bunch up your toes at the top, your toenails won’t have the space they need to grow out properly.
Family History
If you have a family history of curved toenails, you’re more apt to develop ingrown toenails.
Injury or Disease
A foot injury may cause a related ingrown toenail. People with diabetes have poor circulation in their feet, which can lead to, or exacerbate, ingrown toenails.
How are ingrown toenails treated?
Treating ingrown toenails is fairly quick and relatively hassle free. Your doctor will first numb the area and remove the part of the nail that’s growing into your flesh, which will provide you with immediate relief.
If you’re diabetic, it’s especially important that you seek immediate treatment of your ingrown toenail, as any problem in your feet can quickly escalate into something more serious.
